Did you know that 70-80% of women will develop fibroids?!
Why aren't we talking about this? I believe the answer is due to two factors at play:
1) We hold so much shame about our pelvic health that we rarely discuss it
2) There is a lack of education! Women's health is wildly underfunded.
So what is a fibroid anyway? It is a noncancerous tumor that grows inside or on the uterus. It is made of fibrous tissue and can range in size from less than 1 inch to the size of a grapefruit or watermelon!
Women can have many fibroids at once or a single one.
Why does this matter and why should we care?
-Fibroids can cause heavy menstrual bleeding (the uterine artery tries it's best
to "flush" the fibroid out of the body)
-Fibroids can be painful
-Fibroids can interfere with bladder & bowel function
-Fibroids can cause pain during penetration
-Fibroids can cause fertility issues - both infertility & miscarriage
There are 4 types of Fibroids:
-Intramural - within the uterine wall (most common)
-Subserosal - outside the uterus
-Submucosal - beneath the uterine lining
-Pedunculated - on a stalk outside or inside the uterus
Surgery for fibroid removal can cause scarring that affects fertility - and there is a 30% recurrence rate after surgery.
So what's a girl to do?!
We have seen multiple cases of fibroids shrinking to a subclinical size or coming right out using the correct steam plan.
Steaming also adds circulation to the womb - so we have a strong hypothesis that steaming regularly can actually prevent the development of fibroids in the first place!
From the TCM perspective that certified Peristeam Hydrotherapists work with - fibroids are a combination of the imbalance of stagnation & dampness in the body. How can we clear stagnation and pull out dampness? Steam sister!
